Amsler Grid Testing

The first line of defense for macular degeneration is awareness. A simple test of your vision will alert you to any changes that may indicate a problem with macular degeneration or a worsening of your condition. This common test is known as the Amsler Grid.

This grid pattern is the Amsler grid which is commonly used to detect whether a person has AMD.

To print yourself a copy of the Amsler grid just click the "print" button .
Printing is recommended over just taking the test on-screen,
due to variations in screen "pin-cushioning" or arched sides of some computer monitors.

The Amsler Grid looks like graph paper, with dark lines forming a square grid. One of the first signs of macular degeneration can be wavy, broken or distorted lines OR a blurred or missing area of vision. The Amsler Grid can help you spot these early. Early detection of wet AMD is critical because laser treatment, when indicated, is most successful when performed before damage occurs. Since dry AMD can lead to development of wet AMD, most patients should use the Amsler Grid. Check with your eye care provider to find out how often you should use this test.

How to use The Amsler Grid

1. Wear your reading eye glasses.

2. Cover one eye.

3. Look at the center dot and keep your vision on it at all times.

4. While looking directly at the central dot and using your peripheral vision:

  • You should be able to see all four corners.
  • All the lines should be straight.
  • All the small squares should be the same size.
  • Note any distortion.

5. If you should notice any area on the grid that appears distorted (metamorphopsia), blurred, discolored, or otherwise abnormal (see example to the right), please call your eye care provider right away.

6. Do this test for each eye.
